I'm Back & Baking: Fox Donuts

Well it has been quite a while since my last post, hasn't it? I don't really have any excuse for not posting; I honestly don't know how I had three months of summer break and didn't even post once!

Anyway, I'm back now and ready to blog! I have so many ideas for posts and I've written them all down so maybe I'll finally get them all done....

I'm really pleased with how these photos turned out considering this is my first ever baking post and I had to juggle both my camera and a spatula covered in icing. Lately I have been really into watching baking videos on YouTube and following Instagram accounts loaded with pictures of beautiful baked goods. (My favorites? CupcakeJemma on Youtube and NutmegAndHoneyBee and FantasticDonuts on Instagram. They make me want to make all the sweets!!!) I am by no means a professional baker or decorator but I decided that I really wanted to give some cute animal donuts a try.

For these sweet little fox donuts, I used a pretty basic recipe for plain vanilla batter that I found online, which is much more like cake batter than a traditional donut (but still really tasty!). I also used this mini donut maker, which is super cute but I will admit, a little tricky to use. I did manage to make about a dozen donuts that weren't burnt.

The best part of making these donuts is the decorating part!
I made a really simple vanilla icing using:
2 cups of powdered sugar
2 tablespoons of margarine
2 tablespoons of milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

I just put everything in a bowl and mixed with an electric mixer until fluffy. I then divided the icing in half and dyed half light pink using 2 drops of red food dye.

I started by just icing the whole donut with pink frosting using a knife. This totally doesn't have to be perfect! Just make sure there is an even layer for our next round of icing.

Next, I put the vanilla icing that I didn't dye into a piping bag and outlined a triangle onto the center of my donut. I used the piping bag to fill in the triangle and then spread it around with a knife. I used mini chocolate chips for the eyes and pink heart shaped sprinkles for the nose and the ears.

I think that these donuts turned out pretty well for my first time donut decorating and they would be perfect for a Valentine's Day get together! But really you could serve these treats any time of the year because they are just so cute. I also think it would be really fun to make these in different colors and maybe even add some whiskers and make these foxes into kittens!

Now I'm going to go eat these beauties and I promise I won't leave this blog for a whole year again. I had a lot of fun making these and I'd love to know what tips everyone has for baking posts!

Welcome + My Workspace

Hello everyone and welcome to my first post here on Hello, Katharine Rose! I played around with a few ideas for my first post, all along the lines of introducing myself, but than I remembered that I'm horrible at introducing myself and if I did something like a 50 Facts About Me post, I would probably fail miserably and come up with about 15 things. So, I decided that I would do a less direct method of introduction by showing you my desk. I think that you can really tell a lot about a person by their desk. Whether they are messy or organized, what kinds of projects they are working on, and whether they are an office supply fanatic or not (obviously an important thing to know). I spend a lot of time at my desk blogging, making lists, doing my homework, procrastinating on doing my homework, so I try to make it a space that reflects my interests and personality.

I think the focal point of my workspace is the bulletin board that hangs above my desk. I like to pin up some of my favorite things to create a collage/ mood board of my life. Some highlights: one of my favorite quotes from Patti Smith that I pulled out of an Oprah Magazine, an Ezra Koenig heart brooch I made and wore to a Vampire Weekend concert, and a Jane Austen button that reads 'Austen is my homegirl'.

My calendar is from Rifle Paper Co. and I'm absolutely obsessed with it because it isn't just a calendar, it is a work of art for your wall. I love taping up little things on the wall near my desk. Just today I hung up these polaroids from a Valentine's Day party I threw for my friends (no boys involved, only my #girlsquad and LOTS of chocolate).

On my desk, I keep a wide range of miscellaneous objects. On one side, I have a lot of pens, notepads and washi tape because I am definitely an office supply fanatic. You can tell by my shrine of colored pens and markers and also because of how many of my friends gave me pens and stickers for Christmas.
I also keep my polaroid camera on my desk as well as a Fresh lip balm and some of my favorite nail polishes right now (Lincoln Park After Dark by OPI and Glinda by Marc Jacobs).

I hope you enjoyed my very first post and that you stick around for more! I'm not exactly sure what kind of content I'm going to be posting but I guess part of the fun is going to be figuring it out. I'm so happy to finally be starting a real blog and I have a million ideas I am so excited to share!
